NCARB certified and licensed to practice architecture in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and Rhode Island, BAaD has had the opportunity and good fortune to work with great clients across the US creating beautiful, efficient, lasting places.
Fascinated by the way that spaces affect our well-being, understanding and interaction with the world, James decided to pursue his Masters of Architecture at the University of Oregon for its focus on environmental design. What set it apart was its dual focus: not only on sustainable building design strategies, but more importantly, on creating meaningful built environments. Using architecture and design strategies as a means of better understanding the world we inhabit and the spaces and places that we can create.
Striving to make a place in all that we do, we have developed an appreciation for the world through the creation of the built environment. Our buildings are each a unique design that responds to and reflects each individual client's way of living, the unique context in which the building is located, and a desire to improve human interaction with the world they inhabit.
Deeply steeped in energy-efficient design, we were early adopters of the Living Building Challenge and exterior insulation strategies, taking lessons learned through that process into creating a reasonable, attainable, efficient approach to making beautiful buildings. With a passive house certified home, several net zero homes, several net positive homes, and several off-the-grid residences, we are prepared to deliver highly efficient buildings that reflect the character of the owners, are affordable to build, and affordable to operate.
Critical to it all is the understanding that we are making a built environment for people. The most sustainable building is one that lasts and that people love. Clients should love how their places work, how they feel, and how they are inhabited. The best homes are the ones that disappear into their site as they are tailored to feel as if they have always been there!
